Music for Jess

 


My friend Jess and I got into a music swap today.  She was sending me Russian ska and I threatened to retaliate in K-Pop but I realized there were so many more songs that I wanted to share with her that I was just going to have to sit down and dedicate a block of time to fully getting into it without interrupting her work day too much.  So.... here we go.

This one I actually already shared with her - but since it's what started the sharing trend in my head, it's where I have to start again.  This is from the recently ended South Korean idol competition show Kingdom: Legendary War.  It was part of the combo team challenge and was the "rap team" entry.  It's rappers from BTOB, Stray Kids, & ATEEZ coming together - and it is glorious.

This is SUGA from BTS (also known as Agust D).  It's the rap of an introvert who dreamed of fame dealing with the reality of his own success and how it has created conflict between the psychological concepts of persona and shadow within himself.

The title track from Tomorrow X Together's latest comeback.  It's the next generation of K-Pop exploring Rock, grunge rock, and emo elements and mixing it in with their teen chaos themes.... and it WORKS.

More bubblegum in sound, but there's nothing wrong with that.  The alliteration of "purple night" in Korean makes for a super fun rhythm in the lyric that I really enjoy.

Speaking of bubble gum... they lyrics aren't anything deep.  It's a fun buddy song.  But.... would you like some funk/big band in your K-Pop?  I know you would!

It's a great song without the lyric translation.... the beat, the synth work, the flow and just the VIBE of it all.... but WITH the translation.... an entire song about how trauma can push you to create art (sing) without actually that trauma actually being healed by the art.... yeah.  Have a song.

I don't actually think Jess will need the translation to enjoy this one (but the vid does have eng subtitles).  I think all she needs to super enjoy this is to realize that the it's written mainly by a Korean/Australian and is him adding Maori hakka into K-Pop to get his generation heard.  Yeah.  It's a fun slap in the face.

Another Wang song that is short, interesting, and has a video with amazing visuals.  I think Jess will especially enjoy the guitar work.

The vid has eng captions... they are worth the time.  A different vowel sound from the BTS guys since it's a Japanese song done for a TV show theme.  More mellow in sound - but damn it is so good.  I love soft rap in the middle of the lyrical soundscape.

This song is what happens when a K-Pop group known for their Hip Hop feel writes a song inspired by the movie La La Land and tries to do a more "musical theatre" song.  It's catchy, but waaaay more interesting on a musical level when you know how they got there.

Fortnum & Mason Tea Advent Calendar - Day 2 Jade Oolong

 Day Two of the advent calendar and what did we get? Jade Oolong!  As good as the assam blend was yesterday, I was excited to taste the quality of today's oolong.  I had high hopes. So, I made myself a cup according to the directions -trusting them on the temperature and the timing. All in all, it's not a BAD quality oolong, but I've had better and it didn't compare at all to yesterday's cuppa.  I think the thing that cut into my enjoyment of the oolong was that this one had a sort of grassy flavor on the end note which persisted a bit into the after taste.  Because of the grassy end note it took me longer to get through the cup - so by the time I was ending the cup it had cooled.  I have to say, I'd really enjoy this as an iced oolong with a bit of added sweetness.

Tea Review: Vanilla Almond Spiced Chai by Trader Joe's

 This was in the refrigerated section of Trader Joe's, and well, I love me a good chai.  Loving a good chai means that I am eternally on the hunt for good chai blends, which means I pretty much have to try nearly every chai that I come across because you never know when it is that you're going to find THE chai blend that is perfect for YOUR palate.  As such, I picked this up for a taste test. Now, the large print advertises this as a chai - but if you keep reading the bottle, the smaller print bills this as a protein smoothie, and honestly that's far more accurate.  "Protein smoothie with chai tea, almond, coconut cream, and an exotic spice blend" is how the entire label reads.  Texture wise, this is DEFINITLY a protein smoothie.  It's thick in that nearly melted milk shake sort of way, and it has a coarseness to the texture that utterly betrays the presence of the chopped up almonds.  There is also the not quite dissolved powder sensation that you get...

Tea Review: Strawberry Rhubarb Oolong Tea

 It's been a hot minute since I did a tea review that wasn't part of an advent calendar, but this morning I felt like trying something new, and so - a review is in order! A while back, Plum Deluxe sent me this Strawberry Rhubarb Oolong sample as a freebe with one of my orders and it has gotten lost in my tea cupboard for longer than it should have.  This morning, while digging for the right tea to satisfy my mood, I rediscovered this little dime bag hiding among the larger stashes and decided that her time had come! First off, I was surprised that while being a billed as an Oolong, that the package said it should be brewed at boiling temperatures since light Oolongs are usually brewed at 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit and dark oolongs at 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit. But then I noticed that the oolong was blended with some black tea, and so that made more sense.
